Tall Column Planters β How to Use Them and What Makes a Good One
Tall column planters make a disproportionate visual impact for the space they take up. Here's how to use them, what sizes work for which spaces, and what to look for in the material.

A tall column planter does something most pots can't: it draws the eye upward and makes a space feel more deliberate. A pair flanking a front door, a row lining a driveway, a single statement piece in a corner β the proportions work in ways a shorter, wider pot doesn't.
Here's how to think about tall planters for your space.
What Makes a Planter "Tall"?
Generally, anything over 60cm in height reads as a tall planter. The most versatile sizes are:
- 60β70cm β works for most residential entrances, good with medium grasses or small palms
- 80β90cm β statement height for patio corners and flanking features
- 100cm+ β hotel lobby, commercial entrance, or large estate scale
Diameter matters as much as height. A 100cm planter that's 25cm wide looks like a chimney. The best tall planters have a diameter-to-height ratio of 1:2 to 1:3.
Planting for Tall Planters
The plant needs to match the proportions. Plants that work well in tall column planters:
- Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) β arching leaves that complement the vertical shape
- Agapanthus β reliable, South African native, spectacular when in flower
- Ornamental grasses (Pennisetum, Miscanthus) β movement and texture
- Small palms (Chamaedorea, Rhapis) β clean architectural look
- Standard-form topiary β ball-on-stem forms amplify the column shape
Avoid very low-growing plants in tall planters β they get lost and look undersized.
What Material Works for Tall Planters?
Height creates leverage. A 90cm planter that tips over in wind puts enormous stress on the pot wall where it meets the ground. This is where material choice matters most.
Terracotta at 90cm is heavy (30β40kg) and fragile. One fall and it's finished. In Highveld frost it's also susceptible to cracking at the base where water pools.
Fibreglass is light (too light for tall planters outdoors β they tip in wind) and looks obviously plastic up close.
Solid concrete works structurally but is impractical. An 80cm solid concrete column can weigh 80β120kg. You need machinery to move it.
GRC fibre cement is the right answer for tall planters. Our 90cm Cylindrical GRC planter weighs 18β22kg β movable by two people with a trolley, but heavy enough to be stable in wind. The wall thickness (12β15mm) provides structural rigidity without the weight penalty of solid concrete.
Where to Use Tall Planters
Flanking entrance gates or doors. A matched pair at the same height creates symmetry and signals arrival. Works for homes, estate gates, hotel entrances, office lobbies.
Driveway lining. A sequence of identical tall planters along a driveway or pathway creates rhythm. The spacing matters β too close and it feels cluttered, too far apart and the effect is lost. Generally 2β3m spacing for driveways.
Corner anchors. A large patio or terrace often has dead corners that feel unfinished. A single tall statement planter anchors the corner and changes the proportions of the whole space.
Lift lobbies and reception areas. Indoor tall planters (with good overhead or supplemental lighting) are a low-maintenance way to bring greenery into commercial spaces.
Practical Considerations
Drainage. Tall planters need a drainage hole at the base and ideally some grit or gravel in the bottom quarter to prevent roots sitting in water. Waterlogged soil in a tall planter is hard to fix without tipping the pot.
Potting mix. Use a well-draining mix β standard potting soil compacts over time in a narrow, deep pot. Mix in 20β30% perlite or coarse river sand.
Stability. If placing on a deck or balcony, check the surface load rating. Our 90cm GRC cylindrical planter at 20kg plus potting mix (another 15β25kg) plus plant is 40β50kg total β fine for most surfaces but worth checking on elevated timber decks.
